Sailing Instruction

Instruction in sailing at Half Moon Bay Yacht Club is available for adults and youths.

  • Adult Sailing Classes
    • Every month during the spring/summer sailing season (depending on demand and weather conditions) the Club offers sailing classes for adults. Each class occupies one weekend, spending the mornings in the classroom and the afternoons on the water, sailing in Cal 20s. At the end of the class students will be able to hone their skills during various opportunities to sail at the Club, with the potential to get checked out as skippers to use the Club's boats at any time.

Topics covered in this class include:

      • Terminology
      • Safety, including right-of-way rules
      • Parts of a boat
      • Basic seamanship skills
      • Steering, balance and sail trim
      • Wind awareness
      • Points of sail
      • Rigging and de-rigging
      • Upwind sailing (beating)
      • Downwind sailing (reaching and running)
      • Launching
      • Docking
      • Knots

This class uses U.S. Sailing’s Basic Keelboat textbook. A copy is included with the class fee.

      Class Fees

The class fee is $200 for Club members and $450 for non-members. Priority is given to members for classes that are oversubscribed.

The classes are limited to 12 students so that each student gets sufficient time performing all tasks during the sailing portion of the class.

Cancellation of a registration should be as soon as possible, so waitlisted students can take the slot.  If a cancellation is within one week of the class, only one half of the registration fee will be refunded; otherwise the full fee will be refunded.

To see the available sessions and to register, see the adult sailing class calendar.

  • Adult Dinghy Classes
    • On demand, the Club offers classes in sailing dinghies for adults, using the Laser as the sailing platform. The focus for the class is to get sailors out on the water safely and learning small boat sailing concepts and skills with confidence. This single-handed (one person) boat is unique; most of the control depends on balance, and all the balance depends on body movements and weight placement.

Participants must bring wetsuits to the class. Reading of the Start Sailing Right textbook is highly recommended. You can purchase the book on Amazon.

If you would like to participate, contact the Adult Sailing Instructor Manager expressing your interest.

  • Youth Sailing Camps
    • To teach young people how to sail, the Half Moon Bay Yacht Club offers sailing camps during the sailing season.
