History

The Club began with a dozen or so coastsiders who responded to a crude flyer posted at local businesses meeting at the Powell's home on Saturday, May 13, 1978.  The group used the harbormaster’s storage room as its first facility.  They held the first annual "Commodore's Dinner," at what is now La Costanera in Montara, on November 11, 1978, with 114 members attending.  John Powell became the Club's first Commodore.  He cobbled together the first Bylaws by liberally lifting from other yacht club's Bylaws, and Mike Day revised them into something that approaches legitimacy.  Early on, John tired of paying Club expenses, and proposed a buck a month dues, but got push back. Then Mike and Connie Day saved the Club from the 'dust bin' by creating a 'beach party' identity.

From there, it grew into a true yacht club that organized racing, trained new members, facilitated access to sailing for those without boats, explored kayaking, hosted visiting racers and cruisers, and enjoyed a rich social calendar.

In the early 80's, the Club was able to purchase its clubhouse from local Club members, Willy & Herta Binsfeld.  The location has beach access to support its various sailing programs or just beachcombing in a quiet corner of the harbor. The Club’s facility was expanded in 2009 with construction of the 1600 sq ft annex, the Event Center.

Although the Club has grown and changed with our community, it retains its original, essential character as a friendly, fun place with people who enjoy each other’s company.

Commodores and Boards

In the more than 40 years of the Club's existence, it has been managed by a Board of Directors that includes the Commodore as the Chair of the Board and both the Vice Commodore and the Rear Commodore. These members have volunteered countless hours to the management of the Club, and their contribution to making the Club what it is today is acknowledged and appreciated. It is significant to note that many of these people, including the Club's first Commodore, are members of the Club to this day.
