Whether you come from a family of sailors or have never been on the water, sailing is a wonderful sport at any age. Learning to sail is especially exciting for kids and young adults, offering mastery of many skills and appreciation of nature and the world around us.
At Half Moon Bay Yacht Club we’re committed to providing sailing and other on and off-water opportunities for those 8-16, from beginners to advanced racers, through our summer youth sailing camps and programs.
This summer, camps are offered from June 28 through August 20 to fit into your family’s busy summer schedule. Some sailing camp participants start out as a beginner at the start of summer and take classes all the way through advanced before the summer ends. Some sailors from last summer will spend another week with us, improving their skills. And some will take the challenge and join our youth racing team and compete in local regattas.
If you have questions that are not answered on our website, please feel free to send an email to youthsailing@hmbyc.org or call the Club at 650-728-2120.
Sailing Camp is for students between the ages of 8 and 16.
Deciding which class to choose for your sailor is easy.
Beginning Classes
The only requirement is a desire to sail and have fun.
Intermediate Classes
The sailor should be able to confidently and safely demonstrate basic sailing skills.
Advanced Classes
The sailor must be able to pass a skills test administered by the Instructor on or before the first day of class.
Racing Classes
The sailor must demonstrate the ability to race and prevail against other sailors and be able to teach what they have learned to others.
To enroll in any of our Summer Camp Weeks, each sailor must (1) be able to swim 75 feet in a wetsuit and life vest, (2) provide their own wetsuit and footwear, and (3) bring a snack and bag lunch each day.
• Swim test will be administered on the first day of class.
• Wetsuits can be rented at local surf or dive shops
• The Club will provide life vests if necessary but, for purposes of fit and comfort, we recommend that each student have their own.
• Be sure the student’s name is clearly marked on their bag lunch.
We want our students to have fun. Also, we want each student to understand that the objective of the Camp is to learn how to sail safely. Therefore, following the instructors’ directions at all times is very, very important. Disruptive behavior is much more than annoying in this case. It can put people at risk.
A graduation ceremony will be held on Friday afternoon for each session and parents are invited to watch their sailor demonstrate what he/she has learned and receive their diploma.

Frequently Asked QuestionsIs it safe?
All classes are conducted within the confines of Pillar Point Harbor, which is protected by a breakwater. Students and their boats are always within sight of instructors who are on the water in chase boats. Safety is the Camp’s top priority.
What equipment do students need?
Students provide their own wetsuits and footwear. Rentals are available at local surf or dive shops. The Club will provide life vests if necessary. But, for purposes of fit and comfort, we recommend that each student have their own. Be sure to mark all equipment with the student’s name using indelible, water-proof markers.
What kind of boats are used?
The Club has a fleet of Coronado 15s that are used for the Sailing Camp. This is a fun, versatile boat that is the perfect teaching platform for young sailors. For more advanced sailors, there are also Lasers available.
How do I register my student?
First, decide which category your sailor fits into: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced or Racing. Next, decide whether you want a one-week or two-week camp. Now, go to the Class Schedule and pick the dates you want. When you are ready, go to the On-Line Registration form on this website and follow the instructions.
Do you provide food?
Each student is required to bring their own bag lunch. We would love to provide food but meeting everyone’s dietary needs and taste preferences just isn’t practical.
What information will I receive?
Participants will receive:
• Parent’s Handbook that should answer just about any question you can think of (electronic link/hard copies available upon request)
• Student tee shirt that bears the Camp’s logo (distributed first day of class)
• Introduction to Sailing, which is our Camp textbook (distributed first day of class)
