Youth Sailing

2011 was a very successful year for Youth Sailing at Half Moon Bay Yacht Club. The Summer Sailing Camp was well attended, feedback was very positive and a lot of new excitement has been generated around the club as a result.

Other exciting news includes the clubs successful bid to win the PICYA (Pacific Inter Club Yachting Association) Nimitz Trophy. This award, named after the famous WWII Fleet Admiral who commanded American forces during their long advance across the Pacific to ultimate victory, is awarded to a club for having made the greatest advancement during the current year in promoting youth activity in yachting. This includes instruction in boat handling proficiency, seamanship and safety.

2012 promises to be a very exciting year. The club is in the process of building a fleet of Optimist dinghies for summer camp. These 8ft dinghies are safe, fun and a great way for kids to learns to sail on their own!

The club has also budgeted to purchase 2 Laser Radial Rigs. A radial rig is made up of a smaller sail and shorter bottom section of the mast. This reduced sail area makes the boat far easier for a light-weight sailor to cope with. Plans are underway for the 2012 Summer Sailing Camp – watch this space for more info!
