Women Sailing

HMBYC invites women of all ages and sailing experience to join Women Sailing. We meet the second Tuesday and fourth Thursday of the month April through October at 5:30, to sail and then convene in the clubhouse for a drink or a casual dinner. These sailing evenings are great for learning to sail or practicing your skills. In November we meet on the third Thursday for a knot tying seminar.

During the winter months, when the Cal-20’s have unfortunately retreated into the boatyard, we sponsor sailing seminars that are open to all members of the club. Our 2018 seminars include learning to chart a course and navigate in SF Bay on Thursday 1/25/18, a talk with Gail Evener who made the documentary “The Wayfinders: A Pacific Odyssey” about Polynesian navigation on Thursday 2/22/18, and a discussion of racing rules with Beccie Mendenhall on Tuesday 3/20/18 – just in time for racing season.

The goal of Women Sailing is to empower women and girls through sailing. To that end, we work hard at fundraising so that we can introduce young girls to sailing. We plan to participate in our first ever AdventureSail – a program pioneered by the National Women’s Sailing Foundation -aimed at getting at risk girls aged 9-14 on the water.  We also send several of our adult members to Island Yacht Club’s two day Women Sailing seminar each year and have contributed to providing uniforms and training for some of the youth camp teaching staff. This year several of our members will attend the Sailing Convention for Women in Coronado Bay in February and several others will take the ASA bareboat sailing instruction in the San Juan Islands.

We are planning our first ever Take The Tiller Women’s Regatta on August 25, 2018. The event will be open to teams from yacht clubs around the Bay Area. We will sail our fleet of Cal 20’s.
