Youth Instructors
The Half Moon Bay Yacht Club seeks to recruit a highly talented group of instructors including sailors who have been through the HMBYC Youth Sailing Program as well as those who bring experience from other programs. Each year, the Club seeks to find a group of Instructors that will both compliment the goals of the Program and that will fit and work well together as a group.
THE TEAM
The Head Instructor and Program Coordinator has been teaching sailing for nine years in a variety of different boats for four different programs and has been US Sailing Level One certified since 2006.
HMBYC Junior Instructors and Instructors in Training all have safe-power-boating experience, youth sailing and/or college sailing experience as well as a love for the sport of sailing. All instructors have been with the program for at least one year and return this year with additional experience and entheusiasm.
All instructors are committed to sharing their experiences at HMBYC on and off the water in a safe, fun and sportsmanlike manner!
HEAD INSTRUCTOR
The Head Instructor should be a self-motivated, enthusiastic professional who takes teaching sailing seriously. They should possess strong communication skills, organizational and leadership skills and be team players. They should be able to make learning to sail both an enjoyable and rewarding experience for all campers, while maintaining a fun and safe teaching environment.
Qualifications and Certifications:
- Current US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 Certification (or higher)
- Current CPR & First Aid Certification
- Posses at least 3 years of sailing experience
- Previous Sailing Instruction experience
- Pass a background screening test for all those over 18
- Aged 18 or older
Responsibilities
- Assist in developing lesson plans and preparing class activities
- Maintain a flexible teaching style to cope with the mixed ability classes and varying ages
- Conduct classes with adjustments made for weather variables and students progress
- Take proper care and handling of all motorboats and sailboats
- Maintain a safe and fun environment
- Work well with children
- Appropriately handle any behavior issues that disrupt or interfere with class
- Report any problems to the Camp Organizer (boat or personnel)
- Meet with parents and give feedback on campers progress
- Camp hours 8.00am to 4.00pm
- Maximum of 40 hours per week
- Can expect to receive remuneration starting at $15 per hour (depending on experience)
JUNIOR INSTRUCTOR
Junior Instructors are expected to assist the Head Instructor in all capabilities. They will work under the supervision of the Head Instructor and are expected to be responsible role models. Must have a willingness to help younger and/or newer sailors and their instructing colleagues. Previous sailing experience is essential and all candidates should be US Sailing Level 1 certified, but not necessarily have previous teaching experience. All candidates should be good team players, be able to work independently with little supervision and have a flexible approach to teaching to cope with the varying abilities and ages of campers.
Qualifications and Certifications:
- Current US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 Certification (or higher)
- Current CPR & First Aid Certification
- Posses at least 2 years of sailing experience
- Demonstrate good sailing competency but no previous teaching experience required
- Able to rig & de-rig a boat unaided
- Previous motor boat experience
- US Powerboating Certification preferable
- Online NASBLA Powerboating Certification essential
- Pass a background screening test for all those over 18
- Aged 16 or older
Responsibilities
- Assist the Head Instructor in all capabilities
- Launching Boats
- Preparing the coach boat
- Supervising & assisting campers
- Ensuring equipment is cared for and put away correctly at the end of each day
- Ensuring the facility is left in a clean and presentable state at the end of each day
- Assist with instruction both on and off the water where the mixed ability and age of the class demands segregation.
- Work well with children
- Camp Hours 8.00am to 4.00pm
- Maximum of 40 hours per week
- Can expect to receive remuneration starting at $10 per hour (depending on experience)
JUNIOR INSTRUCTOR-IN-TRAINING
Every sailing camp could always use an extra pair of hands!
Half Moon Bay Yacht Club is committed to offering the opportunity for those campers who would like to progress their sailing careers into the field of teaching. Preference will be given to previous HMBYC campers. This role is a volunteer role, where candidates offer to help in the smooth running of camp in return for experiencing camp from the teaching perspective. Candidates can look forward to receiving valuable experience and (at the discretion of the Camp Organizer) financial assistance towards subsequent certification and eventual career development to Head Instructor. Previous sailing experience is required and a willingness to help and support the team is essential. All JIT’s should be mature, good role models and require little supervision in rigging and de-rigging boats. Those candidates will little or no motorboat experience will be given opportunities to work on their skills prior to the start of and throughout the summer camp season.
Qualifications and Certifications:
- Previous camp attendee
- Current First Aid & CPR Certification (financed by HMBYC)
- Posses at least 2 years of sailing experience
- Online NASBLA Powerboating Certification
- Pass a background screening test for all those over 18
- Aged 15 or older
Responsibilities
- Assist the Head Instructor in all capabilities
- Launching Boats
- Preparing the coach boat
- Ensuring equipment is cared for and put away correctly at the end of each day
- Ensuring the facility is left in a clean and presentable state at the end of each day
- Camp Hours 8.00am to 4.00pm
- Maximum of 40 hours per week
- While remuneration is not offered, there may be occasions (at the discretion of the Camp Organizer) where a small stipend will be given in recognition of good commitment and loyalty to the sailing program.

How to do I get certified?
Candidates new to sailing instruction are encouraged to volunteer for at least a year before acquiring certification.
Those candidates showing a potential ability, good commitment and loyalty to the sailing program can look forward to some finance assistance towards certification. The amount of financial assistance will vary year-to-year based on the financial ability of the club and at the discretion of the Camp Organizer.
